Leaving a band with relative success is risky business, especially when it is critically acclaimed. This is exactly what Gwenno is doing. She split from the quirkfest that was the Pipettes to embark on a solo career in an increasingly dwindling music industry.
Still, Gwenno is standing with the times. She just made available her “mini-album” or EP, as I would like to call it, titled U & I, which has some impressive numbers on it. First there’s the cheekily-echoed “I Have A Feeling That Something Is Missing” and then it is immediately followed by her brightest of tracks – “She’s Got Me On Her Mind”
Her brand of indie pop is approachable, yet delightfully eerie. The whole record is laden with impudent lyrics and millennial synthpop. The title track could easily have been an FM-friendly number had it been presented with more mainstream intrumentation. However, that is what makes Gwenno so precious: her unwavering knack for pop kitsch and, of course, her vocal resemblance to Andrea Corr.
If this EP is a sampler for her upcoming album, then we are in for a breakthrough artist. Check her out on MySpace, you can download her EP for free under the “Mini-album” post.

Er, Gwenno’s still in the Pipettes. She’s the only one who didn’t leave earlier this year.
