My LOFT965 Exclusive: The Best Albums Of 2008 has been getting a lot of hits and some comments and email have been popping up from it. Some are surprised I thought Detours was the best album of the year, considering the fact that it has been a year heavy on album releases. Not that I have to justify picking it, I just wanted to give you a glimpse of this wonderful album filled with great songs.
M.I.A. releases EP after success of “Paper Planes”

M.I.A. was just talking retirement when her single “Paper Planes” made it big because of some rap sample in the US and now she is back in the game. This time releasing an EP titled How Many Votes Fix Mix to remind people of an older hit (“Boyz” – this time remixed to feature heavy-weight Jay-Z) and introduce more material (“Far Far” and “Shells”). Right now, anything from M.I.A. is worthy of multiple spins. Talks of a third album are surfacing now.

Introducing… Natalie Bassingthwaighte
1Yes, that is her actual name. She looks stellar and she is following in the footsteps of Kylie Minogue and Natalie Imbruglia on the Neighbors train. The music’s good old dance-pop and there is a lot of room for improvement, but it’s still tangy and fun. However, I always find that the artists that make the biggest impressions in pop history are those with formidable debut singles. This isn’t one.
India Arie releases two new singles…

Readying up for the release of the muchly-anticipated Testimony, Vol. 2: Love & Politics, India Arie has released not one but two singles on iTunes. “Chocolate High,” which features Musiq Soulchild or whatever he is calling himself these days and “Therapy.” The album is sounding poppier than I expect and I am a fan of the folkster in India, but I am sure it will be a great offering what with song titles such as “Vagina’s Monologues.” The album comes out 10th of February, 2009.
Obama supports another homophobe…
I don’t know what to make of this. I am excited about an Obama presidency, but this is the second time he does that. I mean, I could use the freedom of opinion card and say it is not representative of Obama, but I know that had it been a racist pastor his name wouldn’t have even been mentioned. This shows that the prop 8 protests weren’t loud enough and his advisors still don’t grasp who his following is. What a shame. Why is religion involved in the inauguration anyway?

Step Back In Time: “I Wanna Be Down” by Brandy (1994)
2Still getting off my Human high, I took some time out to revisit Brandy’s impressive career. She is one of the only artists that has never released a track I don’t like, a claim I am not willing to bestow on any of my greats from Mariah Carey to Ani DiFranco. This is her debut single and I have to say it still sounds as sumptuous and sexy as the first time I listened to it. I never got bored of it and I am still jamming to it. Back then I knew her as the girl from Thea from KTV2. I really hope “Long Distance” gets the kudos it deserves and “1st & Love” becomes a single.
Film: Cadillac Records (2008)

I was skeptical about watching this movie at first because I felt it was yet another vehicle to re-launch Beyonce’s ailing acting skill. I find her to be emotionally vapid whether she is the love interest in that Pink Panther movie or her lackluster performance on Dreamgirls. Also, I felt that her squeakiness could change the image of Etta James in my head. This, with the fact that I felt Adrien Brody was cast to offset her banality as an actress was frown-worthy.
I was wrong. Beyonce shined, while Brody stalled. The character of Etta James came out to be rock and roll enough for me and (other than minor script falseness like Etta James being successful only after joining Chess Records) the story tied the race struggle and the evolution of what we know as rock and roll now very well. It’s like a serious of mini-biographies that wrap up the careers of legends like Muddy Waters, Etta James, Chuck Berry, to name a few.
The soundtrack is a saviour and the depiction of the white theft of the genre of blues is not curtailed. Moreover, the movie managed to sync well given the broad subjects it tackled.
