Big, phat and proud Mo’Nique has shed some pounds. 40 to be exact. The diva that has created a brand name for herself with over-weight has gone and betrayed her base. But, in reality, Mo’Nique lost the pounds, which she debuted at the Hoodies, no for “an aesthetic issue” but because of health reasons.

Also, Mo’Nique plans to begin filming her show which will be broadcast on BET sometime in October. And there is an Oscar buzz around her performance in Precious. With the show and the movie, she is on top of her game right now.

Company Of We love the skinny boy

Baby shades and soft linens. The skinny boy never looked so good. Company Of We is a new designer house that caters to a highly marginalized demographic of society – the skinny boy hipster than doesn’t was to spend to much. It’s urban chic with a slight air of sophistication. They have been hailed as the new “design darlings” by Selectism and are set to break strong into the market. Visit them here.

Amerie missteps with new single and cover

amerie heard

Amerie is misstepping all over the place. First the singles seem like they don’t want to be singles. Her first attempt “Why R U” sounded like an SWV b-side. The second one pictured above “Heard ‘Em All” is a loud ruckus that doesn’t go anywhere. Plus, the  new age renaissance look is not happening at all. Maybe it’s in keeping with the album concept of In Love & War, which is to close to Daniel Merriweather’s Love & War. She needs to go back to big band instrumentation like the one on “1 Thing.” That was her peak and this templated soul-pop is neither here or there. No wonder her album was pushed back. She needs some direction.

Cover for the Britney Spears singles collection, maybe

The Singles Collection is way too close to Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. But, she needs to make some money y’all. And this will hopefully include all the singles ever. She might need more than one disc for it. It is rumored that this is the cover, which is not bad, but not a new photoshoot. Lady GaGa wrote a song for the album called “Telephone,” which should be the single. Also leftovers from Britney (“Bring Me Home”) and Circus (“Whiplash”). Two previously unreleased track will make it also. “Hush Hush” and “Hold On To Me.” Looks promising!

To deter rain, try the umbrella veil

acapThe Koreans have gone and done it again. This time it’s the cap umbrella. It’s for children, so they don’t get their clothes wet. Meanwhile, here it could be another fashion trend as they are running out of ways to wear the veil. It’s very handy and very futuristic, to say the least. It looks like a UFO (and if you read UFO like it’s a word and not an acronym, you’ve got issues).

Fresh: Video: “Sabotage” by Kristinia DeBarge

We were half an inch away from including this song on SlinkyPop, but the beau told us otherwise. We can understand, that it is to templated and made-for-radio. But, it could be one big club stomper. The video;s quality is not that good, but once it’s officially released we will update. We still can’t believe she is the daughter of Janet Jackson’s former husband and wife-beater.

Moby’s “Wait For Me” is one of the best records of the year

2009 has been rife with album releases. So much more than any other year we have encountered in popdom. Everyone and anyone has some sort of release this year. But, it’s sad to say, that there are a few that actually stick out. Not many good albums this year and we are worried we won’t be able to fill our year-end charts.

Moby’s new album is not one of this empty releases. It’s actually one of his best musical efforts, if not the best. It’s stripped-down and melancholy. Electronica without being noisy, moody without being dreary. Wait For Me is sombre synth record like no other. One would think that being independent would be a hurdle on some artists, but it wasn’t for Moby. With no big-name appearances, the album floats purely on it’s content. Tracks devoid of vocals like “Isolate” amuse and merge well with singles like “Pale Horses” and “Shot In The Back Of The Head.”

If the releases don’t shape up this year, Moby will definitely be on our top 3.

Fresh: Video: “Melody” by Kate Earl

We’ve had a soft spot for Kate Earl since her MySpace heyday. “Someone To Love” was the greatest Fiona Apple song that’s not actually Fiona Apple’s. This time around she is opting for a commercial sound, probably due to the goading of Universal Music. It still sounds good laid under her unique vocals. Watch out, Kate Earl is resurfacing!

Speakers as key-chains

thumb_4131_image1_Mighty_Mini_Speaker

These mini-speaker’s look like the bee’s knees for a hot second or two but then it got us thinking. How loud can they be if they are that tiny and are they more nifty or novelty? They have USB jacks for charging and an AUX input so you can plug it to your iPod or other device. They go for $25 and come in these two different styles. You can find them at this website. They’re still fun to have, no?
