Esther Phillips is one of the lesser-known soul artists. She started her career singing soul and jazz standards, but here she is doing some disco, which she became a staple of towards the end of her career. She is an artist’s-artist. So much so that Aretha Franklin offered her 1973 Grammy win to Esther who was also nominated. She was not very well-understood in the industry and her voice was so unique that, at times, her record company did not know how to package or sell it.
