Esther Phillips is one of the lesser-known soul artists. She started her career singing soul and jazz standards, but here she is doing some disco, which she became a staple of towards the end of her career. She is an artist’s-artist. So much so that Aretha Franklin offered her 1973 Grammy win to Esther who was also nominated. She was not very well-understood in the industry and her voice was so unique that, at times, her record company did not know how to package or sell it. As you can tell, nobody is quite like Esther Phillips vocally. Unfortunately, Esther is no longer with us having died from liver failure due to drug use, but her legacy still remains. It was a great please reading up on Esther Phillips and watching all the YouTube videos that remain from her legacy.
Sexy Track: “Bang Bang Bang” by Selena Gomez & The Scene
1Sometimes all you need is a good pop song to start off your day. This time around it’s Selena Gomez’s “Bang Bang Bang” from her sophomore album When The Sun Goes Down. Although we still didn’t forgive her for her horrid film Monte Carlo, the music is on point. This is a song of revenge to all the do-bad lovers. It’s not trying to be deep, it’s straight-up pop with a fun hook and light lyrics that stick like one-liners. The remixes to this could be huge. Give it a spin and try not to attempt a hair flip.

2Messy little tune from wannabe X-Factor reject. Novelty, to say the least.

2Video Premiere: “Touch Me” by Electric Lady Lab
1Danish artists Electric Lady Lab are paying homage to their neighbors. The band’s newest video for their single “Touch Me” is an ode to Norwegian rockers A-ha, with all the pencil-sketching inspired by synth-pop relic, “Take On Me.” The song, however, is not as great as their previous offerings, but we will give them the benefit of the doubt.

1Video Premiere: “Hip Hop Spa” by Fatima Al Qadiri
1Fatima Al Qadiri is doing more music and this is her latest video. The YouTube description explains: “Hip Hop Spa posits an uncanny parallel between the luxurious solitary confinement of a spa experience and the introspective image of prison solitary confinement often presented in contemporary, genre specific, Hip Hop cultural product. Solitary subconscious is the experience of virtual age Hip Hop culture. The track expands the lexicon of the genre, while questioning the general public’s consumption of rap and hip hop aesthetics.”
