Legendary: “Ain’t Nothing Going On But The Rent” by Gwen Guthrie

“Ain’t Nothin’ Goin’ on But The Rent” is a controversial hit song recorded by late R&B recording artist Gwen Guthrie, released as a single in 1986.

The song was controversial in that the woman in the song can be viewed as shallow and a “gold digger”, since she will only love a man if he’s rich and he has a job. The song has a lyrical interpolation from Billy Preston’s 1974 hit, “Nothing from Nothing”.

While not a big hit in the United States, only reaching #42 on the Billboard Hot 100, it was a big hit in Europe, among reaching #5 in the United Kingdom and remains a classic of ’80s radio in that country.
