Ellen Degeneres calls Dubai
1This brings the lols. What’s up with Rami knowing American Idol and Oprah Winfrey but not Ellen? And the over-use of the world “actually.” All-in-all, he was a sport, though.
The Yas Hotel in Abu Dhabi
1In the world of architecture, everyone knows the UAE has everything big and mighty. Structures from a ski resort in the desert to the tallest building in the world. But, sometimes the important details are left out. For example, the entire city of Dubai does not have a single modern hotel. So, this hotel in Abu Dhabi comes as a break from the norm. It’s designed by New York-based company Asymptote. The hotel bridges the car racing track. It launched in November and is open now. Click here to book.

“Leave Lamees Alone” sensation takes over the UAE!
62Leave Lamees Alone is a response campaign to this incident, which is causing quite a stir in the UAE. The t-shirts, designed by Mohammed Sultan Al-Habtoor for house of glaMO, have been all the rage on the UAE main street. It’s a lighter and more humorous response to what some claim to be an interview that was not representative of Emaratis in general. The t-shirts are a kitschy take on cultural episode and the reply it has generated. Right now, in Dubai, if you don’t have one of these, you are basically a nobody. E-mail now to order these limited edition T-shirts 250 AED (Approx. 20 KD): mhab2r@yahoo.com
Kuwait: Best place in the Middle East for press freedom
1Speaking technically, Kuwait is currently #1 in the Middle East and the Arab World when it comes to freedom of the press. As much as we’d like to boast and rant on this accomplishment, it was not really due to Kuwait’s adamant effort on rectifying some of its freedom faults, but is a result of other countries faltering. This comes on because of Israel’s atrocious behavior in handling media rights during the horrific Gaza Strip massacre. Yes, Kuwait rose to #60 and became the Middle East’s champion merely because Israel fell hard. Inching closer is Lebanon right after at #61 (rising). Then the UAE at #86 and Qatar at #94, both of which steeply down. Still, is #60 good enough? It’s 60 out 175, which gives Kuwait a grade of 65.8/100. That’s a D!

These prominent acts include it-girl of the year and the proud creator of one of the best albums of the year (Lungs) Florence Welch – the lead singer from acclaimed band Florence + The Machine. Florence sported a flowing floral dress from Qasimi. Moreover, the star of the night Lady GaGa also got herself some of the Qasimi stardust. Paris Hilton sashays in Dubai
3It’s true, she’s bringing her freakshow of a show to the Gulf and we will probably all be glued to it. It’s funny that she decided to cover up for the show “in keeping with local customs.” Whose customs? Dubai is a big party shake-your-booty kind of a town. She’s such a poser. I wonder if the actual contestants are from the UAE or Arab or just anyone living in Dubai.
