Ani DiFranco performs “¿Which Side Are You On?” live!
Sexy Track: “¿Which Side Are You On?” by Ani DiFranco
Ani DiFranco could be one of the most prolific artists in the music world today, however, even as she is on her seventeenth full-length album right now, she has not covered many songs. She is an original and has an influx of songs that can fill up many albums. But, when something is as pertinent as this song, Ani takes the chance, but with her own twist. DiFranco took this old labour union folk song penned in activism by coal miner’s wife Florence Reece and built on it, changed the lyrics to make them timely for this era and gave it a great rock edge. Even if the tracks starts with a banjo interlude (provided by the legendary Pete Seeger), it manages to get to a loud angle once it kicks in. A great tune to have around during an election year. So, “¿Which Side Are You On?”

1For some reason this was just uploaded unto the web just in time for Ani’s new album. Here you see Ani’s talents with words put into form. Lovely.
Ani DiFranco’s album “¿Which Side Are You On?” has leaked!
1This could be one of the best days of 2011! Ani DiFranco’s seventeenth (Yes, 17th!) studio album has been released to the public and made its way online. This marks the longest hiatus Ani DiFranco has taken in her prolific career. This one is called ¿Which Side Are You On?. We are already on the 3rd track and loving every bit. Of course we spend a lot of time on YouTube scavenging live sets, so we know some of the songs. But, we could already tell she is concentrating on the melodic side of this more on this one. Click here to visit an unaffiliated website to investigate the leak. As Ani DiFranco would say: “Unauthorized reproduction, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing.”

2Ani DiFranco performs “Do Re Mi” with Melissa Ferrick
1We are so excited for the new album Which Side Are You On? It’s been way too long of a hiatus from a prolific artist like Ani DiFranco. We love everything she has ever done and have high hopes for this one. If you ain’t got the Do Re Mi, you better go back to your beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee.

1We can’t tell you how beautiful 2012 will be just because Ani DiFranco’s new album, which had the longest hiatus precede it, is coming out on the 17th of January 2012. This is a cover, but Ani changed the lyrics a little bit to fit the time. We love is some Ani. “A little socialism, don’t scare us one bit.” – gotta love it.
Exclusive: 5 Questions With Loft965.com: Ane Brun
31. Greetings from Kuwait! Loft965.com picked your album It All Starts With One as an “Album to look forward to in 2011.” How do you feel about that and what do you think this year holds for you?
I’m very proud and happy to hear that! I hope that as many people as possible will hear this album, because I’m very happy with it. I’m going to do my best to spread my music around the world.
2. The first single “Do You Remember?” is a different sound from your other singles. What inspired this direction and what’s behind the song?
The demo for this song is me playing a bass line on one string of a guitar. It’s a kind of melancholic love folk song, and this rhythm was already there in the bass line. But we decided to make it bigger, and we invited 3 drummers to the studio. I felt like making a production where you just can’t stand still. I hope everyone wants to move to it.
3. You recently toured with Ani DiFranco, whom we love here at Loft965.com, how did you find the experience and should we look forward to more collaborations in the future?
Ani DiFranco is a very lovely woman, and I’m a big fan of hers. She was my main inspiration when I first started playing guitar 12 years ago. I loved doing the gigs with her, and playing for her audience, and I hope that I can do it again in the future.
4. What will be the next single from It All Starts With One and why did you choose it?
We chose “Worship” as the next single from the album. I love José Gonzales’ voice and I love this recording. It’s a bit hypnotizing.
5. We love quotes, what is your favorite quote or motto?
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
― Nelson Mandela
Ani DiFranco releases details for new album “¿Which Side Are You On?”
4We have the greatest of pleasures in announcing the new Ani DiFranco album. The new album is called ¿Which Side Are You On? and marks DiFranco’s first studio album in more than three years. The collection features 11 new songs alongside a radically reworked rendition of the classic title song, famously popularized by the one and only Pete Seeger nearly five decades ago, but no less relevant today. Backing DiFranco is a remarkably diverse line-up of stellar musicians, including members of her own crack touring band as well as such guest players as Ivan and Cyril Neville (of New Orleans’ first family of funk and R&B, The Neville Brothers), avant-saxophonist Skerik (Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Bonnie Raitt, The Meters), acclaimed singer/songwriter and Righteous Babe Anaïs Mitchell, guitarist Adam Levy (Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Amos Lee), and a host of New Orleans-based horn players known for their work in such outfits as Galactic, Bonerama, and The Rebirth Brass Band.
What’s more, Ani is joined on her stunning new version of “¿Which Side Are You On?” by the aforementioned Pete Seeger, whom she praises as “my elder, my forefather in folk music and political song.” DiFranco was inspired to record the famed protest anthem after being invited to perform at Seeger’s 90th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in May 2009. She contributed her own straight-from-the headlines verses to the song and has used it to close her own live shows ever since. The newly recorded version of “ ¿Which Side Are You On?” is a funk-fueled epic, incorporating not just Ani’s band, but Seeger himself on banjo and vocals alongside The Rivertown Kids, a Hudson Valley-based children’s chorus, and The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders, a brass band consisting of students from The Roots of Music, a music education program for at-risk middle-school students in New Orleans.

Ani DiFranco debuts new song “Tired Old Face” in concert!
4Oh, how we long for a new record to drop from Ani DiFranco. Righteous Babe Records needs to make a dent in 2011. The happy Ani is busy not recording but touring. At any rate, this is a cute little charged folk tune that will hopefully appear in the next Ani DiFranco album, which will be her 17th full-lengther!
Must-Watch: Video: “My I.Q.” by Ani DiFranco
4We grew up listening to this music and it still rings true to us. Music is great, but it’s greater when you have something to say. Ani DiFranco always has something to say. This is a great kinetic typography adaptation of the spoken word track from the monumental album Puddle Dive that was the voice of a generation. Listen without prejudice.
