Shontelle’s album is a grower…

shon1As much as I love R&B, I feel like sometimes it gets all muddled up in the hype and plateaus for a bit (jackswing? crunk?). It is best when soul and sultry. Shontelle’s horribly named debut Shontelligence seems like a promising reformist record with a hint of reggae. Now let’s hope all of these are: Ciara’s Fantasy Ride (highly unlikely), Lady Love by LeToya (maybe), Pulse by Toni Braxton (she “doesn’t have a single hip hop bone” in her body), Love, Tweet by Tweet (if she dumps Missy), Monica’s Still Standing (again, if she dumps Missy Elliott) and Whitney’s tentatively titled Undefeated.

What is going on here? This is the cover of Ciara’s lead single from Fantasy Ride and I don’t know if she want to be a comic figure, a super-heroin or a prostitute. The heart on her face looks like a black eye and the artwork, I feel, could’ve been much better. Also, the video is a far-stretch from her past and has nothing to do with the single cover.
