Sexy Track: “Next To Me” by Emeli Sandé

Leave it to a Brit newcomer to sweep 2012 off of its feet with one single track. Although the music video is a little lackluster, the song is resilient enough to carry any visual. “Next To Me” is an inspirational anthem to forever love. The track is gospel-tinted but with a resplendent pop sensibility. Even the stoic Madonna said she liked it. If this track is anything to go by Emeli Sande is set to break every market that appreciates a solid pop song of epic proportions. Should this succeed, it will be on every karaoke machine from London to Manila.

Sexy Track: “Princess Of China” by Coldplay & Rihanna

To ensure that their fifth album is a success, after critics have insinuated on their songs being redundant in style, Coldplay have brought in the big guns to ensure at least two hits on the album, considering the first single will be set aflame no matter what it sounds like. So, Rihanna came in on one of the better tracks on the album to lay her vocals on a track by a band known for their melodies more than they are for their pipes. The result is a strongly structured song with poignant lyrics and pop zing. Coldplay should consider hiring vocalists for their music as it seems to work very well on this one. Now, imagine if “The Scientist” was warbled by Jill Scott!

Coldplay cover R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts”

We are still reeling off of the devastation that REM’s breakup has caused. We loved them until the last album. We were just jiving to “Uberlin” the other day. “Everybody Hurts” has been covered many times from acts like The Corrs to more. This one is in tribute to the band’s great 31-year-old career . So sad.

Introducing… The Pierces

How much can happen in the first minute of a pop song? Sometimes, barely anything; sometimes more than a conscious mind can fully compute. To ears that have yet to hear the music of Allison and Catherine Pierce, the first minute of You & I is a journey in itself. A minor-key strum and faintly ominous keyboards subtly draw in the listener, until a lone voice urges escape. “We could bring a blanket for the grass,” goes the first line. Are you coming or not? Then, at 39 seconds, comes a harmony of such irresistible magnetism that, whatever your previous plans might have been, you’re in for the duration. The song is You’ll Be Mine. A song about a divine seduction turns into the very thing it describes. Welcome to the extraordinary new album by The Pierces.

2008 in pop form…

This wrap-up video is very American of course, but I like the way it is out together. I only liked 2 songs of the set, but the mash-up is nicely done
