First Arabic web addresses go online!

This issue has been debated for a while but the internet has finally allowed non-latin URL addresses. This gives many languages the accessibility options that English and other latin alphabet languages have. Several websites have started operating with this new addresses like the Egyptian Ministry of Communication. Good move in diversifying the internet but hell to people who don’t know the languages but need access.

Finland understands the potential of information and the access to it. Therefore, one of our favorite countries stepped up to introduce a law that would make it mandatory for every citizen to have a physical connection to the internet of at least 1 Mbps speed. Yes, you read it right. It’s a requirement by law and if that’s not enough, by 2015, everybody should have a connection that is 100 Mbps or faster. That doesn’t mean that the people will not pay for it, it just means that every person has the right to have a connection whenever they want to. Now, that’s what we call progress!

Due: An apology to Alan Turing

5

Turing_01

Alan Turing is considered the father of computer science. In fact, some will go as far as claiming that he invented the modern-day computer. He revolutionized his science and propelled it to new grounds back when he was allowed. He even got Britain through a war with his genius. But, this respect was not reciprocated.

You see, Alan was gay and he was arrested  for “gross indeceny” – the same law that persecuted Oscar Wilde. He was forced to choose between imprisonment or chemical castration. He chose the latter and after he was shunned and condemned. So, he committed suicide with some cyanide.

Now, the freaks and the geeks have come together to sign a petition to ask for an apology for this horrid and bigoted incident. Sign it here and let it be known that a queen is the reason why you are reading this right now. Go to his Wikipedia page to read more than my synopsis of him.

Tech: Sofa with a built-in PC

sofapcA PC is always welcome. They should do PC beds, PC fridges and PC lanterns. The sofa is also sleek and smooth.

From TechEBlog:

“Priced at $15,436, the Athena could quite possible be the first and only sofa with an integrated PC. While technical specifications haven’t been released, “we’re guessing that those integrated screens that fit so snugly into the armrests feature touch sensitivity.” Click here for one more picture.”

Ladyhawke gets fruity

I don’t get why her music is an apple, if she is allergic.

Introducing… Erin McCarley

000-erin_mccarley-love_save_the_empty-2009-frontLove, Save The Empty is Erin McCarley’s debut album and it is a mixture of pompous folk and moody rock. It is like a cross between Sheryl Crow, KT Tunstall and Chantal Kreviazuk. My current favorites are “Blue Suitcase” and “Sticky Sweet.” I watched he perform live on David Letterman and she was great. I am looking forward to listening more.
