“Paris Hilton was arrested in South Africa and questioned overnight on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

The heiress and a friend were detained at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after watching the World Cup quarter-final match between Brazil and the Netherlands.

According to reports, Paris was held in a cell before appearing before a judge in a Fifa World Cup courtroom. She was released after her close friend, freelance photographer Jennifer Rovero, pleaded guilty to possessing the drug.

“Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana,” her publicist said. “However I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it. The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made.”

Rovero was sentenced to pay a small fine or face 30 days imprisonment – the fine was paid and she was released.

Afterwards, Paris declared her innocence on Twitter: “Hey guys, there’s a lot of crazy rumours going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn’t do anything.”"
