Ani DiFranco could be one of the most prolific artists in the music world today, however, even as she is on her seventeenth full-length album right now, she has not covered many songs. She is an original and has an influx of songs that can fill up many albums. But, when something is as pertinent as this song, Ani takes the chance, but with her own twist. DiFranco took this old labour union folk song penned in activism by coal miner’s wife Florence Reece and built on it, changed the lyrics to make them timely for this era and gave it a great rock edge. Even if the tracks starts with a banjo interlude (provided by the legendary Pete Seeger), it manages to get to a loud angle once it kicks in. A great tune to have around during an election year. So, “¿Which Side Are You On?”

Take the time out for a good cause and to get 100 songs all at once from the likes of greats such us Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. This is the alternative donation. Not that other lackluster release from Lady Gaga, U2, Beyonce and Katy Perry. This one is a classic not only because it’s for charity but because many independent artists are on it.

“gonna go out
to the arrivals gate at the airport
and sit there all day
watch people reuniting
public affection so exciting
it even makes airports ok
watching children run
with their arms outstretched
just to throw those arms
around their grandpa’s neck
watching lovers plant kisses
old men to their misses
at their arrivals gate”

First Listen: “Hearse” by Ani DiFranco
The new direction that Ani DiFranco is taking on her new songs sounds promising. Acoustic and solo Ani also sounded the best. Although, this is not a new sound, it’s one that works. Good song, but let’s hope for better.

“Squint your eyes and look closer
I’m not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I’m beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cuz someday you might find you’re starving
And eating all of the words you said”
- Ani DiFranco on “32 Flavors”

Legendary: “Pick Yer Nose” by Ani DiFranco
This is back when Ani DiFranco was amidst her anti-establishment demeanor. With rootsy folk strumming and a punk attitude, DiFranco shaped a generation with loyal fans. She continues to amuse, but those days are golden days of revolutionary music and a beautiful underground movement in music. Beautiful little track from one of her starkest albums Puddle Dive.

Ani DiFranco has covered an old union song that was also covered by Natalie Merchant. She tweaked the lyrics to make them more timely but left the chorus intact. Lovely little political ditty. Click here for a guilt-free download.
