Must-Watch: Video Premiere: “This Thirst” by Reham

1

We’ve followed Reham’s career for a while now and we are constantly reminded of how beautiful her lullabies are and how poignant and timely her lyrics are. When we originally listened to this track we knew it was written about Kuwait, but the video treatment for the song takes place in Dubai’s metro system and it’s quite lovely. It propels the song to a different level and brings it back to life for us. Watch for yourself!

Kuwaiti license plate on Beyonce’s video “Run The World (Girls)” confirmed!

1

You’ve heard the rumor and its true, the vintage car in Beyonce’s new video “Run The World (Girls)” has an old Kuwaiti license plate on it. No word on how it got there or for what reason, but my friend recently told me that he found a Kuwaiti license plate in an antique store, but that was in Dubai. We wouldn’t be surprised if someone picked up randomly somewhere and attached it to the car so the video would have a more Arabic or “ethnic” feel to it. Afterall, this video’s motif is about revolution, and currently, the Arab world is rocking that trend real hard. At any rate, good thing Kuwait got some props because we have some cool pop-heads over here.

Bring Janet Jackson to Dubai!

Some good folks over here are starting a campaign to bring Miss Janet Jackson to Dubai. If this happens, it will be the first time Janet Jackson comes to Dubai. Considering that her new boyfriend is from Qatar and she hasn’t treaded here, it’s not a far stretch as it is listed in the drop-down menu of her site. It would be great if she did come here as this could be her last tour and, as you might know, we are huge Damita Jo fans since our childhoods and would love to see her and review her. We have seen her live before on the Velvet Rope Tour and it was just stellar.

Film: Alice In Wonderland

3

Normally, we don’t ever head out to see movies on 3D with big Hollywood blockbuster written all over them. It’s just not our thing. In fact, cinema in most places rarely carry anything we are interested in seeing, art house and foreign films just don’t get that kind of exposure. But, we were gently coerced into seeing this with a whole gaggle of queens. Yes, it was a weekday and we were on a vacay. The result is as expected. A hugely-produced mock-up of a classic. Not the book, but the Disney animated film. A bunch of top-notch stars, “amazing” special effects and a new angle on an old story couldn’t save this hodgepodge of overproduction and manufactured sap. To top all that off we have to sit through Anne Hathaway’s incredulously hideous acting.

Leave Lamees Alone is a response campaign to this incident, which is causing quite a stir in the UAE. The t-shirts, designed  by Mohammed Sultan Al-Habtoor for house of glaMO, have been all the rage on the UAE main street. It’s a lighter and more humorous response to what some claim to be an interview that was not representative of Emaratis in general. The t-shirts are a kitschy take on cultural episode and the reply it has generated. Right now, in Dubai, if you don’t have one of these, you are basically a nobody. E-mail now to order these limited edition T-shirts 250 AED (Approx. 20 KD): mhab2r@yahoo.com
