The evolution of the Egyptian veil…

4

These are four pictures from 1959, 1978, 1995 and 2004 respectively of the graduating class of Cairo Univeristy’s English Department. They showcase the change of societal norm in an epoch of a country’s nation. It would be interesting to study the correlation between the political sphere of the times and how it impacts social attributes. How political dynamism, corruption, standard of living, totalitarianism and the state of feminist thought can or cannot impact the same people of the same within decades. And how piety can angulate so quickly with the times and for what reason, if you get my breeze.  Also, it’s also peculiar how the English department has waned with time, but that’s another subject.

Kuwait borders Egypt, according to Fox News

Fox News is not the source to go to for impartial and objective news, but this is just absurd. Conservatives have gone out of their minds (if they have any) and completely disregarded georgraphical facts in one of their recent broadcasts. But, in reality, the average Fox News viewer does not know any better and wants the whole area bombed. They couldn’t care less about the Middle East. Everything is “Yay! USA!” Blind patriotism they call it. It happens everywhere in the world. This is a generalization, but conservatives always tend to be the poorly informed and uneducated people, which leads to prejudice and bigotry and, ultimately, hatred (or they could be informed and educated but evil and greedy). No wonder Fox News caters to the homophobic, racist, sexist gun-owners in the US. This above image is not a slip up, but more a slip into their minds.

Barack does Cairo

So, I stayed up ’til 6 am to watch Obama’s speech on live stream through YouTube and I must say it was worth it. Maybe, he came of as too catering to the expectations of the region and, maybe, he gave the conservatives in the US enough material to taunt him for the rest of his incumbency. But, to make recollection, there has never been a US President so humble, understanding and keen on helping the world as he is. It could be just propaganda, but that rhetoric is truly new territory for a President of the US and its foreign policy. He did his research and he looked as confident and direct as ever. It’s nice to have that after 8 years of buffoonery.

Why the West doesn’t care about Gaza…

gaza_strip_may_2005

I read this good article on Truthdig.com about the West’s indifference to the Palestinian cause. It struck a chord. The death toll now over 600 and the wounded are over 3000. It’s one thing to strike because you are an occupied territory without freedoms and have dire standards of living, it’s another to struck to showcase  your muscle-power. Both crimes, but they are not equal.
