Sexy Track: “The Sweetest Thing” by Dionne Bromfield

1

This is the third time from the same album that Dionne Bromfield gets the incredibly prestigious “Sexy Track” title from our blog. Okay, naysayers you can settle down, we are making a joke much to your dismay. This song is a little tougher than the radio-friendly “Yeah Right” and the extremely infectious “Ouch That Hurt.” It’s a soul song with an old rock mentality. Something that feels like it could be a teeny bopper anthem yet be featured on the snobby Q magazine. The lyrics are the real catch here and they speak a story of ultimate yearning. A proper London streets song with great vocals and words that are uttered of pure emotion. We really believe that Dionne Bromfield is the natural continuation of Amy Winehouse’s legacy.

Legendary: “The Kiss” by Judee Sill

1

Judee Sill is one of the lesser-known singers-songwriters of the 1970s’. She is a great artists who didn’t release enough material and is often overlooked in the history of female singers/songwriters. Recorded in London on February of 1973 for the “Old Grey Whistle Test” TV program on the BBC. There are other clips and songs from this session and the one before it, but sadly this is the only one that has been released. Her songwriting skills and her sense of perfection were a wonder to behold. She was also a wild child and very much a rebel in her own way. She was 28 years old at the time of this recording. A very rare talent.

Leona Lewis postpones album until 2012!

2

Allegedly, Leona Lewis has tweeted that she is very inspired these days and will put her album on hold to add things on it. She apparently wants to make it perfect and, as a result, fans will not get to see some new material until next year. We weren’t big fans of “Collide,” but we are not the biggest fans of Leona Lewis either. Still, she has the chops for a great track.

Introducing… Neon Hitch

2

Hitch was born in the south England countryside in London. For a time being, she was resentful towards her parents for giving her the birth name, Neon, wanting to change her name to a more conventional name, such as Melanie. Her father was a lighting technician. Her mother bought a caravan to live in when their house burned down. They then began street performing, making and selling jewelry and clothing around Europe.  As a result, she never attended school as they did not stay in one location for prolonged periods of time. By age four, she was traveling and performing with the Archaos circus. She trained as a trapeze artist, fire swinger and stilt walker and had performed all over Europe by the time she was a teen. Her family was featured in a BBC documentary. At age ten, she began writing poetry which led to her writing lyrics. Her boyfriend noticed that she could sing and encouraged her to hone her singing. She left home at sixteen to live in India for a few years before settling in London for her music career.

Sexy Track: “Neva Soft” by Ms. Dynamite

1

just when you thought she’s out, she’s back! Ms. Dynamite who was once touted to be the savoir of Brit-soul has a new single under sleeve and it has nothing to do with hype, it’s about a good sound. Ms. Dynamite merges many of the UK’s lesser-known genres like Trip-Hop, Ragga and Britsoul into one track. The Ragga parts annoyed us at first but now we like them. “Neva Soft” is a deep and dark pop song. It has a message without compromising the integrity of the song structure and the catchiness of overall track. It’s strong and deep with consideration to melody. This might not put her back on top just because its harder to digest than the mainstream pop overwhelming the airwaves, but it is a testament to her talent.
