We are still reeling off of the devastation that REM’s breakup has caused. We loved them until the last album. We were just jiving to “Uberlin” the other day. “Everybody Hurts” has been covered many times from acts like The Corrs to more. This one is in tribute to the band’s great 31-year-old career . So sad.

Legendary: “Fuel” by Ani DiFranco
1This is one of the loveliest spoken word tracks from Ani DiFranco’s career, from the epic Little Plastic Castle, one of the albums that shaped our musical tastes and our personal life. This is just pure history in our books and everyone that hasn’t familiarized themselves with this, should.
Introducing… VADOINMESSICO
2Adversity maketh the band. Vadoinmessico have spent a year without money you can fold or a studio to call home. Things were going well at first. The combustible sense of excitement meant that the songs came quickly. It was the sound of a band coming together cohesively for the first time. We were optimistic. Then things fell apart. Half of the debut album was recorded at the original Shunt HQ: then their license was revoked. Instruments were hauled on buses in rush hour and tubes in the dead of night. People argued. People looked for disused and often illegal places to practice. It was noisy. People called the Police.
Introducing… Down To The Bone
1Down To The Bone’s groove gets harder, funkier and juicier. Their music encompasses all that is funky, soulful and jazzy. As founder and producer of the band, Stuart Wade states that ‘it’s all about the groove….that is what gets people dancing, their toes tapping and their heads nodding.’
‘Wade formed the band several years ago, where previous musical and business projects such as ‘Internal Bass Records’ and ‘Think Twice‘ had given him the necessary experience to reach his musical goals. In 2001 Wade decided to go solo with the band and split from Internal Bass Records. With eight Down To The Bone Albums receiving critical acclaim and chart topping success in the US contemporary Jazz Billboard charts, and three compilation Jazz/Funk albums, he hasn’t looked back.

Introducing… Jessica 6

Formed in 2008, Jessica 6 is a hypnotic Brooklyn-based trio that pushes the boundaries of nu-disco and R&B. “It all started when Nomi [Ruiz] brought over a kick-pattern and a song she’d written called ‘Fun Girl’,” recalls Jessica 6 bassist Andrew Raposo of the band’s conception. Ruiz (the band’s front woman), Raposo and Morgan Wiley, Jessica 6’s keys and synth master, originally met while performing with Hercules and Love Affair. “We were enjoying listening to each other’s music beyond Hercules. It was really just about having fun,” says Raposo who first met Wiley in college before joining the now defunct DFA produced hip-hop act Automato together. “Then Nomi came in with hundreds if not thousands of songs her laptop.”

Two of the biggest boy bands to grace this earth are going to tour together. New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys are joining forces to tap into their former teeny bopper market. We bet some memorable songs are going to be heard on this one. But, they should have went all the way and gotten other boy bands to join!

Music for February: Synthosium
9
This time around, I opted for the different route. I shed some pop pride and got with the experimentalists. This is the driest of my compilations, not in a bad sense. More like sun-dried. Initially, I did a very moody chillout compilation and then I decided to shelf it (perhaps for March). After being unsure about it (and a little advice from friends), I decided to make February up and rocky. There’s a huge element of electro-clash, some folktronica and an on-going, but not singular theme of everything synth. Whether it was synthpop or some twangs of freakbeat. This compilation is not for everybody, especially those used to a pop template, but it is surely a grower, at least for me. It’s a great get-up-and-go kind of compilation. I hope you like and, of course, feedback’s always welcome.
