Rebecca Ferguson releases her new single “Glitter & Gold” on April 29. The song is taken from Rebecca’s incredible debut album Heaven, which has sold over half a million copies so far since it was released in December – fast approaching double platinum.

Rebecca recently completed a sold out UK tour, and will soon depart for the USA where she will be playing her first ever shows in LA and New York. Rebecca will also be visiting Germany, Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand for TV appearances, showcases and other promotional activity.

On April 16 One Little Indian Records is set to release the first in an eight-part series of remixes of tracks from Björk’s Biophilia. Available on 12” vinyl as well as CD and digital download, the first entry in the series features the Current Value remixes of “Crystalline” and “Solstice.” The series will go on to feature a new collaboration every two weeks with artists 16-bit, King Cannibal, Death Grips, El Guincho, Matthew Herbert, Hudson Mohawke, Alva Noto, and These New Puritans. Each entry in the series will also be made available in a 500-piece limited edition deluxe package designed by m/m with special blue mineral papers and embossed foil lettering consisting of a 12” LP and CD.

The Biophilia 10-track album, out now on One Little Indian/Nonesuch Records, is available digitally, in CD format and on vinyl. Additionally, each of the 10 songs also is available as a special feature of the Biophilia App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. App tutorials have been created and can be viewed on youtube at: LINK

Biophilia was named one of 2011’s Best Apps by Apple and landed on year-end best-of lists from NME, Mojo, The Observer, and Uncut, among others. Fast Company recently named Björk one of the top five most innovative companies in music.

Björk has collaborated with app developers, scientists, writers, inventors, musicians, and instrument makers to create a unique multimedia exploration of the universe and its physical forces—particularly those where music, nature, and technology meet.

The project is inspired by and explores these relationships between musical structures and natural phenomena, from the atomic to the cosmic. The New York Times raves, “the new songs juxtapose hovering textures of choir and organ with sparse pointillism and sudden eruptions of breakbeat drumming, all set against Björk’s idiosyncratic melodies: pithy or sustained, pausing unexpectedly and then snaking upward and opening out to a banshee wail.”

The critically acclaimed Biophilia live show premiered this past summer at the Manchester International Festival (MIF) in England in what The Wall St. Journal called a “magical evening,” followed by a sold out residency in Björk’s hometown of Reykjavik. Björk recently brought the show to New York for a residency at the Roseland Ballroom and New York Hall of Science, where the latter hosted a three-week-long Biophilia education series featuring interactive science and music workshops for middle-school children. Dan Wempa of The New York Hall of Science said of the education series: “Everyone at NYSCI is proud of the great collaboration with Björk and her team to make the Biophilia Education Series a huge success. Together, we gave 60 middle schoolers from Queens and Manhattan an opportunity to learn science, nurture their musical creativity, and get a behind the scenes look at tesla coils, pendulum harps and other instruments they’ve never seen before.  An experience the kids won’t forget anytime soon! Congratulations and good luck, Curver, Björk and the entire Biophilia team!”

Initially commissioned by MIF, the intimate performance finds Björk accompanied by a set of unique musical instruments created by a team including an Icelandic organ builder and a graduate of the MIT Media Lab. Among these creations are four 10-foot pendulum-harps, a MIDI-controlled pipe organ celeste re-fitted with bronze gamelan bars, and twin musical Tesla coils. The performance also features an award-winning 24-piece Icelandic female choir and visuals from the Biophilia Apps with app developer Max Weisel performing on stage alongside Björk and musicians Manu Delagu and Zeena Parkins. David Fricke of Rolling Stone called the New York show “Even more immersive than the Biophilia show I saw in Reykjavik last fall…unearthly in its range and force, yet absolutely natural and frank in its ardor and hope, [Björk's voice] is the vital human tissue connecting everything else.” A version of the program will also tour to major European festivals including Roskilde, Oyez and the iTunes Festival in London.

Don’t get your panties in a knot, this is just a little predictions. Judging by the fact that Beyonce is done with her pregnancy and this track is a robust dance number that is not to be let go, it feels right that Beyonce is not done with her 4 campaign and is hiding this gem (one of many on the album) for a later release. Probably during the summer because it’s a dance track. If it is not in the works, it should be. #JustSaying.

The ever-so-risque Scissor Sisters are going to take on Yas Island! The chart topping band will be bringing their widely loved and infectious dance floor anthems to the FLASH Forum this January. Known for their humorous and often controversial performances, the band’s unique mix of disco, New York electro and good old fashioned Elton John-era rock n’ roll is widely loved right across the globe. I wonder how they will do the gold leotards in the UAE.

British songstress V V Brown’s second full length album, LOLLIPOPS & POLITICS is set for release on February 7, 2012 onCapitol/EMI. Check out the brand new video for her first single “Children” (featuring Chiddy of Chiddy Bang).

Tomorrow, fans can watch a live performance of “Children” on VH1′s “Big Morning Buzz Live”. We are finding it hard to get along with Tori Amos’s new release. On one part it is too mythological and on another too classical. At any rate, the merger of this track with the golden classic “Pretty Good Year” works well. It makes us want to give Night Of Hunters another spin.

It might seem dichotomous and down-right wrong to sing this song at the Wall Street protests, but we think they are either parodying it or just using some playful irony. They are certainly not cheering about “livin’ in a material world.” In any case, the spirit of the protesters are high and we hope reform comes out of this. This system the world lives in is stale and backwards. No one is benefitting except the greedy. It’s about time socialism wasn’t thought of as a dirty word. As long as one person lives in poverty, we all live in poverty.

This is as fresh as they come. This video just debuted and Loft965.com is bringing it to you first! Will Young’s new album, which we really haven’t given the time it needs to listen to, Echoes has spawned another single and it features a dog show!

Lana Del Rey is the newest kid on the block. Although she looks like a Hollywood starlet, she sings in a sullen, dark voice songs of sorrow. Her tracks “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” are taking off like no other. It is somewhat surprising as the genre is a bluesy jazz that doesn’t frequent the charts much. Her real name is real name Lizzy Grant – a singer/songwriter from Lake Placid, New York, United States. She released her debut album, Lana Del Rey in 2010 and issued the “Video Games” single in October 2011. She is known for being an internet sensations. Her powerful lyrics, singing ability and aesthetic looks got her places. Let’s hope the album hold a lot more hits, but if not, she could be an actress.

Following the three year anniversary celebrations of Loft965.com, some people went a little extra to show their love for our little blog. Other than the cyber-success we are having, it’s always great to see that some feel passionately about the blog to take the time out to show it. We had the pleasure of seeing our favorite Girl Aloud, Nadine Coyle, performs several tracks at MuuMuse.com‘s event #Gumbopop in New York City. The best vocalist in the group, in our humble opinion, performed her single “Insatiable,” a dance remix of “Runnin’,” the new single “Sweetest High” and this new track titled “Don Julio,” which is also tentatively  titled “Save Me.” Great re-tweaking of some of the tracks and lovely new song. The video quality is shaky but we were partying hard!

We went out on the town last night and heard from a fellow toriphile that Tori Amos’s eagerly-awaited, highly-anticipated new album Night Of Hunters has leaked in full online. Of course, we couldn’t sleep until we listened to the whole thing, so we settled for YouTube. At any rate, the album’s out and it surely will impress. For 25-year-old Malaysian singer/songwriter Zee Avi, “Swell Window” is the gorgeous track that started the journey and also the opening track of her second album, Ghostbird. “It’s a song about seizing the moment,” she says, “and for me, a new direction and a new voice came and stayed.”

In the two years since her self-titled debut was joint-released on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records and Ian Montone’s Monotone Label, Avi’s very free spirit has wandered from major music festivals (SXSW, Outside Lands, Bonnaroo) to huge tours (Lilith Fair) back to her homeland of Sarawak, Borneo Island, where she recently picked up an International Youth Icon Award. For a little perspective, just four years ago, Avi was a former art student in Kuala Lumpur who posted a song on YouTube to catch up with a friend and was quite surprised to find herself the toast of the Internet when thousands of strangers discovered her effortlessly stunning voice. Literal overnight success can easily poison young minds, but Avi is no ordinary mind — while critics were comparing her chilled-out, jazzy, ukulele-based songs to Billie Holiday and Cat Power she was continuing to make visual art and remaining her buoyant, whimsical self. “I’m 25 going on 12 and a half on a good day,” she laughs, flipping through a notebook filled with colorful drawings and lengthy notes.

Avi started writing ghostbird in her Brooklyn kitchen last summer, but followed the wind to the balmy waters of the Florida Everglades where she found endless musings, “with absolute silence and calmness.” In March, she took her fresh batch of tunes to Johnson’s Solar Powered Plastic Plant studios and got down to business with producer Mario Caldato, Jr., best known for his work with the Beastie Boys and beloved Brazilian artists like Bebel Gilberto. It only took two weeks for them to lay down the 11 tracks on Ghostbird (it means “Burung Hantu” which means owl in Avi’s native language), including the closing number on the album, “Stay In The Clouds,” a new addition that was written on the last day of recording.

This album lead Avi to new ideas. “Siboh Kitak Nangis” which translates to “Don’t You Cry,” is the first song in Avi’s dialect on an international album and the poppy groove of “The Book of Morris Johnson” is the first time she has written new music to accompany someone else’s words. “Morris Johnson” was inspired by a Floridian folk artist whose paintings of animals and accompanying text about their instinctual lives “capture naiveté and innocence and enthusiasm,” Avi says. After buying a few of his pieces at an art show, Avi called him up and said, “Morris, I’m ready to be your disciple, I’m ready to turn your words into a song.” (Morris was thrilled — his daughter’s a huge fan.)

The track “Anchor” is one of the handful of songs that made the album from Avi’s New York writing sessions and also what Zee refers to as a “premonition track,” and another NYC track, “Concrete Wall,” is a striking a cappella that features contributions from beloved turntable god Cut Chemist. And yes, she is well aware June has 30 days rather than 31 (the song “31 Days” was inspired by a couch-surfing friend who lamented, ” ‘I was homeless for 31 days in June.’ “) Every song has a different mood, every song is a different voice, every song is a different story,” Avi explains. But the idea of the ghostbird unites the album, and Avi has tucked an owl call into a few tracks on the disc, “So it’s a little scavenger hunt when you listen to it.”

After the album arrives on August 30th, 2011 Avi is itching to get back on tour and show off her live skills. “I want people to feel like they’re being hugged,” she says of the soothingly beautiful ghostbird. “I think this is my swell window right now.”

Born in New York City in 1985, King grew up in a small apartment on the lower east side. Her parents were a singing duo who performed and traveled regularly, bringing her and her older brother along with them. At age 16, King left school to pursue her music career. She began playing shows in restaurants and venues around New York City including CBGB’S and The Bitter end.

Signing her first record deal with J Records in 2004, her debut album “East Side Story” was released 3 years later in August 2007. It went on to earn a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary R&B Album of the Year.” During that time King toured with John Legend and Floetry. She also opened for various artists such as Nas, Alicia Keys, Chaka Khan and Erykah Badu. After parting ways with her label, King continues her work independently. Her sophomore EP entitled Seven is scheduled to be released on iTunes on July 12, 2011.

One of our favorite artists on earth has launched her media campaign for the new classical-inspired album Night Of Hunter and, boy, do we love us some Tori Amos interviews. The very poignant Amos usually packs a punch in her interviews, but we didn’t expect her to be an addict of reality show like us. She has explained: “I actually sat with Tash at Easter and watched ‘The Real Housewives of New York’ from the beginning. She said, “Mom, you’re going to get addicted!” I sat there eating popcorn watching the whole thing – I couldn’t believe it – from early morning until late at night. My sister was flying in and we were waiting for her to show up and it wasn’t a great day outside and so we watched an entire season! It was crazy! But I couldn’t watch it ever again. I said, “I can’t do this, Tash – I’ll never work again!”

As if it wasn’t enough that Ameriie changed the spelling of her name to reinvent her image with an annoying double “i,” which only works if your last name is Minogue. But, Ameriie is further jumping the shark by naming her new alvym Cymatika. Cymatics is the study of visual sound. Beautiful concept, but not when it sounds like something came out of the crypt. At any rate, let’s hope she’ll have something to show on this one unlike the previous one.

How much can happen in the first minute of a pop song? Sometimes, barely anything; sometimes more than a conscious mind can fully compute. To ears that have yet to hear the music of Allison and Catherine Pierce, the first minute of You & I is a journey in itself. A minor-key strum and faintly ominous keyboards subtly draw in the listener, until a lone voice urges escape. “We could bring a blanket for the grass,” goes the first line. Are you coming or not? Then, at 39 seconds, comes a harmony of such irresistible magnetism that, whatever your previous plans might have been, you’re in for the duration. The song is You’ll Be Mine. A song about a divine seduction turns into the very thing it describes. Welcome to the extraordinary new album by The Pierces.

For all of that, perhaps the most remarkable thing about You & I is that it almost didn’t happen at all. In 2009, Allison and Catherine – two sisters raised in Alabama, before decamping to New York – had already made three albums together. Critical acclaim had never been hard to come by, but after their 2007 album Thirteen Tales of Love And Revenge struggled to find a wider audience, Allison and Catherine decided that perhaps their future in music lay separately. “There was definitely a conversation,” recalls Catherine, “where it just seemed to us that maybe we had taken it as far as we could. We’d had some good times along the way, but at that moment in time, it felt like it wasn’t to be.”

What a difference a day can make. Less than 24 hours after deciding to draw a line under The Pierces, fate stepped forward – in the unlikely guise of Guy Berryman, bassist with Coldplay and longtime admirer of the group. “If you’ve been to New York enough times, you quickly realise that the musical scene there is quite tight,” says Berryman. “You get to know everyone. I knew Albert Hammond Jr [of The Strokes] who, at that time was engaged with Catherine. I had always loved The Pierces’ songs, so when she told me they had just split the group, I felt I had to do something.”

An offer to support Coldplay in South America convinced The Pierces to ponder their options a little longer. Catherine and Allison played some new demos to Guy, who was in the process of starting a production company. Straight away, it became apparent that the sisters’ newest songs were plumbing hitherto untapped depths of inspiration. Flying to London to work with Guy and producer Rik Simpson, Allison remembers “a new energy” attaching itself to the very first song they all worked on together.

With swirling harmonic currents reminiscent of The Mamas & Papas, Kissing You Goodbye established a mood that dramatically yielded a rapid succession of magical performances: the insistent folk-pop majesty of Drag You Down; the otherworldly yearning of We Are Stars; and, in I Put Your Records On, a spare acoustic meditation on the fallout of a relationship between two musicians. Singling out It Will Not Be Forgotten for special attention, Allison speaks about the “huge leap” represented by the recording of that song. And you can see why. The best songs don’t sound like they were written so much as lovingly retrieved from your own subconscious. To hear it once is to feel like you’ve known it your whole life.

For Catherine, the adversities of previous liaisons had fossilized into a rich source of creative fuel. A case in point was Love You More. “It’s about a tortured relationship,” she explains, “I was in the midst of something that was incredibly frustrating. At the time, I felt like if you think you love someone enough, everything will resolve itself. But I learned the hard way that it wasn’t necessarily true.” That feeling of watching the wheels come off and being powerless to do anything about it is perfectly captured in the song’s storm warning chorus and driving guitar hook.

The sense that you can’t see the bridleway of true love for what the horses have left on it weaves its way through the whole of You & I. Fleetwood Mac – who have also known their share of romantic ups and downs – were a touchstone reference when making the album. “We write a lot of songs that sound like ballads if you play them acoustically,” explains Allison, “And one thing I noticed with the songs that Stevie Nicks wrote for Fleetwood Mac was that they worked in that way too, but when you put a groove behind them, they really move.”

At the heart of You & I, though, are the core components of a musical bond that has lasted a lifetime. Home-schooled by “free-thinking” parents, Allison and Catherine – the latter being the younger by two years – grew up in an environment where “Simon & Garfunkel mattered way more than getting the hang of long division.” If it’s a source of amusement that, at the end of 2010, one newspaper singled them out as one of the most promising new bands of 2011, it also retrenches a feeling that this is a new start.

As Guy Berryman puts it, “You begin with an idea that something could turn out as great as this. But the truth is that none of us knew if this would result in anything. You just believe in the feeling that you had when you first heard the songs – and, if at the end of it all, that feeling remains intact, then maybe you’re onto something.” Catherine Pierce concurs: “It felt like we’d been searching for a sound our entire careers. Finally it happened when we least expected it.”

Again, sad day.

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but this is a sad day in music. One of the greatest poets of our time and impeccable songwriters has passed away. Gil-Scott Heron is know for re-branding the genre of spoken word and gearing it towards the evolution of rap and soul. Also, he is known for his poignant and controversial and political lyrics. We really got into his last album I’m New Here and didn’t expect him to pass at the age of 62. Truly a sad day for music.

As we assumed previously in our “Lofty Prediction” post, Beyonce is in fact releasing her new album in this summer. More specifically, June! Apparently, the former Destiny’s Child has just previewed some of the songs to music execs in New York City. The luckly listeners were allegedly “amazed” at what they heard. We know she worked with Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, Ne-Yo, Diplo, Sia, The Script and Odd Future’s Frank Ocean, but we always thought Beyonce needs a magical video to push her music. We’ll wait and see.

“She’s just come off tour with Amy Winehouse, Prince and Stevie Wonder but somehow Janelle Monáe is squeezing in time to work on new material.

“I’m working on new music now and as soon as the music is done, an album will be submitted, but we’re already like, ‘Let’s go,’ ” she says.

Monáe, who performed at last Sunday’s Grammys with Bruno Mars and B.o.B, added that she’s “in a really good, creative space” right now. She and Mars have just announced a new North American tour kicking off on May 4th in New York.

Our favorite Aussie, Sia Furler, has dished some news on the upcoming Beyonce project. Apparently, it’s almost done and ready to go. Click below for the dialogue.

After gushing about her high hopes for working with Beyoncé, Australian songstress Sia revealed that she told B’s behind-the-scenes team that she wanted to lend a creative hand for the new album. “So I just said to all the producers, writers, everyone, help me make this happen, and then Diplo e-mailed me and said, ‘where are you in the world right now? would you be interested in flying to New York? I’m writing with Beyoncé,’ and I was like, ‘Yesss!’ ” the singer told MTV Australia.

Despite Diplo’s offer, Sia said she was unable to fly out because of schedule conflicts, but is in the process of pitching songs to Beyoncé. When asked if her submissions were for Beyoncé’s forthcoming LP, Sia said, “Well, there’s only one song left for this album, so I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one. That’s my dream, that’s my goal.”

Because it’s a couple of blocks away from us.
