How much can happen in the first minute of a pop song? Sometimes, barely anything; sometimes more than a conscious mind can fully compute. To ears that have yet to hear the music of Allison and Catherine Pierce, the first minute of You & I is a journey in itself. A minor-key strum and faintly ominous keyboards subtly draw in the listener, until a lone voice urges escape. “We could bring a blanket for the grass,” goes the first line. Are you coming or not? Then, at 39 seconds, comes a harmony of such irresistible magnetism that, whatever your previous plans might have been, you’re in for the duration. The song is You’ll Be Mine. A song about a divine seduction turns into the very thing it describes. Welcome to the extraordinary new album by The Pierces.

Legendary: “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” by Gil Scott-Heron
1Again, sad day.
Gil Scott-Heron has passed away!
1We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but this is a sad day in music. One of the greatest poets of our time and impeccable songwriters has passed away. Gil-Scott Heron is know for re-branding the genre of spoken word and gearing it towards the evolution of rap and soul. Also, he is known for his poignant and controversial and political lyrics. We really got into his last album I’m New Here and didn’t expect him to pass at the age of 62. Truly a sad day for music.
Video Premiere: “Carousel” by Vanessa Carlton
1Fourth album underway, Vanessa Carlton is now independent and she will do whatever music she wants to and you can tell this festival-morning music and her signature piano playing is doing here. We want to hear more.
Beyonce’s new album is coming out in June!
2As we assumed previously in our “Lofty Prediction” post, Beyonce is in fact releasing her new album in this summer. More specifically, June! Apparently, the former Destiny’s Child has just previewed some of the songs to music execs in New York City. The luckly listeners were allegedly “amazed” at what they heard. We know she worked with Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, Ne-Yo, Diplo, Sia, The Script and Odd Future’s Frank Ocean, but we always thought Beyonce needs a magical video to push her music. We’ll wait and see.
Official cover of Shania Twain’s book “From This Moment On”
1Shania Twain went and got a mediocre cover with a horrible title taken from one of her most famous songs. It’s really sad to see someone like herself not ruffle their creative feathers. Boring.
Video Premiere: “Stuck” by Lauren Pritchard
3What a beautiful voice that reminds us to that of Diane Birch. We look forward to listening more to her album Wasted In Jackson.
Janelle Monae is working on a new album!
1
“She’s just come off tour with Amy Winehouse, Prince and Stevie Wonder but somehow Janelle Monáe is squeezing in time to work on new material.
“I’m working on new music now and as soon as the music is done, an album will be submitted, but we’re already like, ‘Let’s go,’ ” she says.
Beyonce is one song away from completing album!
3Our favorite Aussie, Sia Furler, has dished some news on the upcoming Beyonce project. Apparently, it’s almost done and ready to go. Click below for the dialogue.
Legendary: “Copacabana” by Barry Manilow
1Because it’s a couple of blocks away from us.
Loft965.com wins “Music Authority” blog award!
10The hard work has paid off and we are getting recognized by many institutions that monitor cyber development. We woke up today to find yet another badge of honor that has been given to us (we didn’t even apply). Topics Best has branded us a “Music Authority.” The website is a comprehensive portal for sorting and rating blogs. We are very thankful and happy for this.
Jazmine Sullivan ends music career!
We’ll be the first to tell you that we weren’t feeling Jazmine Sullivan‘s sophomore album Love Me Back, but that is not ground for retirement. Stay, drop Missy Elliott and do a jazz standards album and all will be fine Ms. Sullivan.
Legendary: “River Of Dreams” by Billy Joel
1Back in the day when piano men made it big, this gem came aboard and rattled our senses with its feel-good mixture of pop, rock and gospel. This is probably our favorite Bill Joel track. We love “We Didn’t Start The Fire” but we partially disagree with its overtly nationalistic lyrics.
Ani DiFranco has laryngitis, cancels NYC shows
1One of the shows that we billed to be the greatest show in 2010 has been cancelled due to Ani DiFrance’s medical condition. We know how Ms. DeFazio loves her touring and takes it seriously, so we understand the need for the delay of the show which features Ane Brun as an opening act and Melissa Ferrick. Let’s hope she gets well soon.
Lil Wayne released from jail!
Again: Music for October: Bichotomy
2Yes, we know we are a bit late, but we are in New York City and having a little too much fun, but it didn”t stop us from doing one of the things we do best and that is compiling some fresh beats for you. October is usually a sombre, down and lowtempo month, but this is an exception. No Glumella here for you, this is another offering of upbeat jumpy tracks that will make you feel summer’s still here. We ended it up with a myriad of tracks that we can’t resist not offering, so here it goes. The title is a play on the word “dichotomy” and “bimorphemic” as most tunes on this one have no melodic-genre relation but are placed next to each other. We hope you like Bichotomy. Click away.
Video Premiere: “Something Else” by Diamond Rings
Australia’s Next Top Model blunder!
Video Premiere: “New York Is Killing Me” by Gil Scott-Heron
We had the privilege of attending the first screening of Gil Scott-Heron‘s new video directed by Chris Cunningham at MoMA. It was a thrill to watch and we were taken aback by his lyrics. Lovely little video for a great spoken word song from one of the inspirers or the neosoul movement.
Don’t Quote Me, Vol. 453
“New York‘s such a wonderful city. Although I was at the library today. The guys are very rude. I said, “I’d like a card.” He says, “You have to prove you’re a citizen of New York.” So I stabbed him.”
