Must-Watch: Video Premiere: “That’s Alright” by Laura Mvula

Laura Mvula is taking 2013 by storm with her sound. This is her third video and her second official single. The album, Sing To The Moon, marks her landing on the music scene platform and we have high hopes for her in the future. She is probably the closest thing to Nina Simone we have to do.

We love when she yells: “Who made you the center of the universe?” in the song.  Continue reading

Exclusive: 5 Questions With Sabrina Starke

1. Greetings from Kuwait! In 2008 billed you as one of the artists to keep an eye out for. Now you are on your new album, how has it been?

It’s my third album already. It’s been a great road since the first one. I’m exited about the new album and proud of all the experiences so far. (Sabrina Starke’s Outside The Box is out now!)

2. Outside The Box is your new album. How much time and effort did it take for you to complete it and what sound were you going for?

I think about 1 year of writing the songs and thinking about production. We recorded the album in 10 days. After that the mixing & mastering process took awhile because that’s the finishing touch.

3. Who are your influences and who would your dream collaboration be with?

I’ve been influenced by a lot of artists. I really love soul, jazz, blues & folk music. But also reggae and hip hop. So I like a lot of styles. And love to use them as inspirations for my own music. A dream collabo would be with Tracy Chapman or John Legend or The Roots.

 4. We absolutely love “Sun Settle Down.” When will the next single drop and which track will it be?

We are still discussing this at the moment. Glad to hear that you like “Sun Settle Down”. Thanks for the support!! I appreciate it very much.

 5. Here at we love us some quotes. What’s your favorite quote or proverb?

“Freedom is living without fear” by Nina Simone

“There ain’t no substitute for the truth. Either it is or it isnt” by India.Arie

“It takes a village to raise a child” – African proverb

Legendary: “I Ain’t Got No… I’ve Got Life” by Nina Simone

Some voices come and go and others stick to a generation inseparably. Nina Simone is one of the latter. She mixed beautiful soul music with great arrangements and socially-conscious lyrics all with grace and style. She turned words that could come out as trivial into statements of a generation. She shaped soul music and remains a legend forever.

Anna Calvi’s debut album leaks!

Anna Calvi, one of the artists we told to look out for in 2011, is ready to bestow upon us some serious melodies. Her debut album has made it onto the internet and it is sounding not too far away from the cover of “Jezebel” that made us fall in love with her. It sounds like early PJ Harvey without the extra noise. Lovely little album that’s made to put you in a winter mood, too bad we are headed to South America real soon.
