We don’t really care for Paul Weller too much, but this song does something to us. Something deep inside.
“If you don’t have enemies, you don’t have character” – Paul Newman
Jai Paul is a 21-year-old from north-west London currently getting a lot of blog and A&R attention. We can see why. He’s a warped pop star in the making; or rather he’s what you imagine a pop star signed to the Warp label might be like. Of course, Warp already have a freak-funk future pop act on their roster, Jamie Lidell, who seems to alternate between straight commercial funk – as though he were a slightly edgier Jamiroquai – and out-and-out experimental electronica. Jai Paul appears to be using his music to combine both extreme approaches. “Don’t fuck with me, don’t fuck with me,” he coos in a light, airy falsetto on BTSU, the most acclaimed track on his MySpace, over mad 8-bit sonics, bursts of burbling bass, crisp dubspace beats and weird, warped – that word again – harmonies. But somehow, JP manages to make it all seem like a pop song.
“He who risks and fails can be forgiven. He who never risks and never fails is a failure in his whole being.”
- Paul Tillich
RuPaul is super busy promoting the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race and her book Workin’ It. But, that hasn’t stopped her from releasing an album this year. Unexpectedly and suddenly, with no promotion, RuPaul has released a remix CD titled Drag Race that remixes the best of her previous album Champion. The album is not listed on Amazon, 7digital, Wikipedia and there is not a single search engine that pops up with news about this. There was just a tiny little tweet that went by and left from RuPaul. So, this is the first announcement of it. Check it out on iTunes. Meanwhile, aren’t you just addicted to the show?
Not that Paul Smith can’t pull a couple of good number out his rainbow pin-striped sleeve, but did he really find that name suitable. It would have been cool if it was titled “Man” but smelled all fruity and sweet. But, in his quest for masculinity he picked that name. Same goes with his clothes. When was the last time you walked into a Paul Smith store and didn’t come out looking like you are preppy for a job interview?
I don’t particularly think it’s funny, but I am growing to like the song even if it’s lyrics are v to the omit.
