Last year The New York Times named Beirut the #1 place to go to in 2009. This year, the list is out and there is not trace of Beirut. It was replaced by Sri Lanka at the top spot (which we fully agree with as we visited Weligama, Kandy, Colombo and Taprobane Island and absolutely adored it). But, interestingly enough, Damascus, also a place of untapped touristic gold, has sprung up at #7. The article explains: “The next Marrakesh? Perhaps mindful of the way that renovations of historic riads have drawn upscale travelers to Marrakesh, Damascus hoteliers are trying to mine tourism gold in the rundown buildings of the Syrian capital’s Old City.”
Also, the most compelling entry at #9 is Antarctica. Now, that’d be fun. Let’s go!

Is Michael Jackson still alive?
One of the rising topics in the blogosphere is a Tupac-Shakur-meets-Elvis-Presley kind of rumor about Michael Jackson’s death. Some people are claiming that there are two videos that are contrary to what the press reported. One (above) is proof that Michael Jackson was moving and hadn’t died prior to the ambulance rescue got to his house. Another is that of a video circulating of someone that looks like Michael Jackson being taken by ambulance into some building. In the second one, he is allegedly walking into a door like nothing happened .I expected rumors like that to surface. Some people just can’t take the fact that he passed away – like me.

I have been hesitant to report on MIKA latest effort because I felt like the song was all kinds of wonderful turd. There’s just too much going on and the chorus doesn’t sync well. Also, it brings back the memory of the Go-Go’s. Now, as I listen to a the song with the a friend he pointed out the similarity between “We Are Golden” and “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” by Belinda Carslile. The chorus sounds melodically exact and there is no writing credit on the song. It sounds too close for comfort. And, he has a sampling history. By “sampling,” I mean taking the whole song and it’s melody then changing the lyrics around and making it his. He did it with “Relax (Take It Easy)” and totally mangled Cutting Crew’s “(I Just) Died In Your Arms.” All-in-all, I’d be surprised if We Are Golden survived the sophomore slump. We took a little break to honor Michael Jackson’s life and, also, because we happen to be in the our favorite city in the world. The big apple. The airport’s a good time for us to return. So, this is back in full force. We are still mourning Michael, but we will try to stay away from the gossip thats circulating around the Jackson name and just report and/or comment on the music and the legacy. Keep it coming!

As much as I like Beirut, I don’t think they got it right this time. I mean Beirut has its charm, but it is definitely not the greatest spot on Earth to vacation in. At first, I thought the article was trying new things, but it totally discredited itself when they put Doha, Qatar in 9th place. Dubai, maybe. But, Doha?

Introducing… Erin McCarley
Love, Save The Empty is Erin McCarley’s debut album and it is a mixture of pompous folk and moody rock. It is like a cross between Sheryl Crow, KT Tunstall and Chantal Kreviazuk. My current favorites are “Blue Suitcase” and “Sticky Sweet.” I watched he perform live on David Letterman and she was great. I am looking forward to listening more.
