I Am In: Don Sao, Laos.

1

It’s a quaint little island right by the golden triangle in the lovely Mekong River. It faces both Burma and Thailand. The people are ever-so-friendly and the little gifts shops are overflowing with gorgeous little things. The food could be better, but the snake whiskey is their specialty and it tastes good, especially when you touch the snake inside with your lips. Delish.

The wonders of Chiang Mai

3

When I came here, I didn’t know how charming Chiang Mai would be. It was called “The Rose Of The North” and I expected it to be a little metropolitan. But, what I experienced is the tiniest of cities city at the bank of a river with great peoples and quaint surroudings. The green is lush and the hospitality is noting short of grand. The temples are many and very varied. Actually, we had a full day tour just visiting temples and wats. The night bazaar is full and loud. I am glad we did this detour to the north. So much so, that tomorrow we are thinking of heading to Chiang Rai and the golden triangle to see where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. I will keep you posted.

I Am In: Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

To me, it’s a fusion between Saigon and Mumbai. The people are the friendliest I had ever met in my life and the country is new and raw to tourism. In comparison to conservative Vietnam, I found to be more laid-back and relaxed than any indochinese country. The architecture is french colonial, but in derelict. So far, I am loving Phnom Penh.

I Am In: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

After a 9 hour flight any land would do nice. It was dark, but Saigon was shining bright. The immigration officer was surprised to see a Kuwaiti passport and asked for my return ticket. I said I have an e-ticket. They took our passports for 15 minutes and came back and everything was fine. The weather was hella humid and I loved every minute of it. The hotel is French colonial and the lobby smelled of massage. I have a river view.  Went out for some Tiger bear and walked around for an hour. I have a feeling I will like it come shine.

Preparing for Vietnam

1

I am finding great fun in planning the trip as I read the history of Vietnam. I realized how much there is to know about the Vietnam War even as I studied it. I read about My Lai. The horror the happened there. About the separation and reunification, the changing of the Saigon’s name to Ho Chi Minh City and a lot more. I am mighty excited. I am dreading the plan, though. But, I am sure they will have some nice Bordeaux.

Travel: Guiding my way through

1

They have arrived. So, I finally decided on my trip. I am going to do like I used to do. That is, arrive somewhere different than I depart and make my way there. In this case, I am landing in Saigon, Vietnam and coming back from Bangkok, Thailand. I will have 12 days in between. In those days I have to cover cities in Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. Preferably, more than one. So, I am packing light, taking the Wallpaper* guides that just arrived and roughing it up. Any suggestions or recommendations are welcome as always. Now, time to look up hotels.

Hotel: Hotel On Rivington

  • Hotel: Hotel On Rivington
  • Location: Manhattan, New York
  • Style: Urbanite Chic
  • Sexy Factor: Trendy, lively and young.
  • When to go: Year-round

My experience: Seriously, out of all the times I have stayed in New York City this has to be the best hotel I have been in. Although I have stayed in a myriad of modern hotels and some gaudy ones, but this takes the crown. Located in the hip Lower East Side, it is tucked away from the tourist bonanza in a gayborhood that is fast becoming New York’s trendiest with boutique shops popping up everywhere and a high ratio of young New York. The service in the hotel is opulent and the staff are ready to help. The mini-bar has more alcohol in it than Karen Walker’s home and the ground floor is always full with New York’s finest freaks. What else would you want?

Hotel: Spanish Lesson

  • Hotel: Room Mate Marina Hotel
  • Location: Valencia, Spain
  • Style: 21 Century Contemporary
  • Sexy Factor: Lively, affordable, young and friendly
  • When to go: Summer, mid-Winter

My Experience: We went to Valencia on a whim. Got our tickets there literally 2 hours before the flight. Got there and got online looking for central boutique hotels. What we found was the best part of the trip. We fell in love with the city and the staff was more than helpful. A couple of steps from the beach and not to far from the nightlife. Recommended for all.
