Must-Watch: Video Premiere: “This Thirst” by Reham

1

We’ve followed Reham’s career for a while now and we are constantly reminded of how beautiful her lullabies are and how poignant and timely her lyrics are. When we originally listened to this track we knew it was written about Kuwait, but the video treatment for the song takes place in Dubai’s metro system and it’s quite lovely. It propels the song to a different level and brings it back to life for us. Watch for yourself!

Leave Lamees Alone is a response campaign to this incident, which is causing quite a stir in the UAE. The t-shirts, designed  by Mohammed Sultan Al-Habtoor for house of glaMO, have been all the rage on the UAE main street. It’s a lighter and more humorous response to what some claim to be an interview that was not representative of Emaratis in general. The t-shirts are a kitschy take on cultural episode and the reply it has generated. Right now, in Dubai, if you don’t have one of these, you are basically a nobody. E-mail now to order these limited edition T-shirts 250 AED (Approx. 20 KD): mhab2r@yahoo.com

Kuwait: Best place in the Middle East for press freedom

1

575px-Kuwait-Islands

Speaking technically, Kuwait is currently #1 in the Middle East and the Arab World when it comes to freedom of the press. As much as we’d like to boast and rant on this accomplishment, it was not really due to Kuwait’s adamant effort on rectifying some of its freedom faults, but is a result of other countries faltering. This comes on because of Israel’s atrocious behavior in handling media rights during the horrific Gaza Strip massacre. Yes, Kuwait rose to #60 and became the Middle East’s champion merely because Israel fell hard. Inching closer is Lebanon right after at #61 (rising). Then the UAE at #86 and Qatar at #94, both of which steeply down. Still, is #60 good enough? It’s 60 out 175, which gives Kuwait a grade of 65.8/100. That’s a D!

Paris Hilton sashays in Dubai

It’s true, she’s bringing her freakshow of a show to the Gulf and we will probably all be glued to it. It’s funny that she decided to cover up for the show “in keeping with local customs.” Whose customs? Dubai is a big party shake-your-booty kind of a town. She’s such a poser. I wonder if the actual contestants are from the UAE or Arab or just anyone living in Dubai.

Swine flu allegedly reaches Bahrain

map_bahrainNews is coming in that there is a suspected case of swine flu in Bahrain. The suspected person is an American traveling from Miami and stopped over in Frankfurt, Germany. The “heat detectors” spotted the man with a 40 C° fever. The man has been quarantined in good old Gulf fashion until further notice and tests. They need to send a sample to WHO in Cairo.

The case of Obama and Iran

i090325c511

There has yet to be a consensus on the whole Iran issue and it seems that Obama’s hand is still outstretched for some sort of compromise not only because that would be the wise thing to do after Bush’s waging of two unlawful wars, but also because, frankly, the US can’t afford an all out debacle with Iran right about now. The Iranian government have a choice of accepting this sort-of-truce or retreating.
